Genesis 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Living in Northern California this year since January 1st, it almost seems that this history is being fulfilled again. I could make a political comment but I decided to leave that silent.

Anyway, just how bad is our flood? And is it really a flood?

Here is our local rain gauge history.....

I am going to ignore the two data point errors in the middle of the chart.

This chart goes back to end of the 2004-5 rain season. What you notice is that our 2016-17 rainfall has not quite reached even last year's level. I have little doubt that we will exceed that 34" rainfall, as the normal pattern is to have lots of rain in the Feb-Apr time frame. We are only at Jan 20th. But also notice that our rain does go in cycles....two years of more than average and 3-4 years of below average. Hey I was pretty good at math, so what do you suppose that gives you...duh...about the average! BTW our average is 28".

Let's look at the details more recently.

Since I ran this graph we have actually reached 32", so we are 4" over average and still two inches below last year. the most recent high was just under 40" in 2011, and on the other chart 44" back in 2007.

So you see we really are not in a drought, at least where we live...we have our normal storage issues...in the lean years, but there is plenty of water to make up for this in the heavy years.

If it keeps raining...we may reach 40" again this year....or even set a 10 year maximum.

But clearly nothing unusual, so there is no need to build the Ark!

Btw for those real math geeks, the average water falling on our 1/3 acre lot is about 200 million cubic inches. With about 7.5 gallons in a cubic foot, that is 100,000 gals.....or about 150 gals per day for my wife and I each. I just have to figure out how to save this excess for the dry months....maybe I can pay the water company to build reservoirs!

People in water-efficient homes typically use less than 280 gallons per day.

  • The average water use per person is about 55 gallons per day indoors. This does not include outdoor water use.

So there you have it....we are really can be sustainable water gatherers.....

Perhaps we should just thank God, who designed and created this system.

Deu 28:12  The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

Heb 6:7  For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2  The same was in the beginning with God.

Joh 1:3  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Joh 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Joh 1:5  And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
