Proverbs 16 - This captures them all...

Ok, I'm over posting today, but I am refining my efforts to perceive...

Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 

Direction concerning all of these elements are contain in this chapter, and certainly Heart gets a good portion of coverage.

Pro 16:9  A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Pro 16:25  There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Pro 16:33  The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

Pro 16:1  The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

Pro 16:2  All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

Pro 16:4  The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

Pro 16:13  Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.

Pro 16:14  The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.

Pro 16:15  In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

Pro 16:16  How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

Pro 16:17  The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

Pro 16:18  Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Pro 16:19  Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Pro 16:20  He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.

Pro 16:21  The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.

Pro 16:22  Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.

Pro 16:23  The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.

Pro 16:24  Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Pro 16:31  The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.

Pro 16:32  He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Pro 16:33  The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

Numbers 20 - right intentions gone astray....

I classify this verse under strength, but it is best seen as how in our emotions and good intentions we try with our own strength of efforts to do God's will....but we do it contrary to his command.

Observe.

Num 20:7  And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Num 20:8  Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

Num 20:9  And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.

Moses Strikes the Rock

Num 20:10  And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

Num 20:11  And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

Note this simple change from the command to the action....and it's consequence.

Num 20:12  And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Num 20:24  Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.

One use of this is illustrated here.

Amo 6:13  Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

John Gill writes...And this also is the language of such persons, who ascribe regeneration and conversion, faith, repentance, the cleansing of a man's heart, and the reformation of his life, yea, his whole salvation, to the power and strength of his free will, when man has no strength at all to effect any of these things; these are all vain boasts, and very disagreeable and offensive to the Lord; and for such like things persons stand here reproved by him, and threatened with woes; for woe must be here supplied from Amo 6:1.
