Too many Posts....

As you might detect I have a passion for God's word and literally every chapter has some useful teaching worthy of comment. I'm going to try to slow the flow of posting for my own benefit since this is taking a lot of time. Maybe a good goal is one or two from a day's reading.

In the meantime here is today's list which you are free to follow or begin your own. My current hard copy KJV has many highlights in many colors and a few notes. Perhaps you have been marking up your own copies also.

Reading the KJV - A useful discussion...

Someone in my Westminster Confession Study Class sent me the links to the discussion which I am reposting below. If you have never heard the issues, perhaps take the time to listen or read the text.

My thinking is we can not persuade anyone…The modern view is too entrenched in our churches these 50 years….and in the seminaries. From my own perspective…I never picked the KJV up until 2013….a little over 4 years ago. Would never go back. I had previously switched from RSV to NASB to NIV to ESB based on the “common” recommendations. I actually started blogging on my Bible reading based on the ESV back in 2009. My reading took on more earnest in 2012 when I began the 10 Lists Reading Program…..and I now have some 8,000 chapters read under that plan.

Only the smallest part sticks though.

I can’t say for certain but I think the Holy Spirit has to change someone to the KJV. Best we can do is a faithful witness, and perhaps having someone in your group actually reading it helps. Once you begin actually looking at the debates and issues, it becomes more convincing….but not without the Spirit’s help. Definitely a minority remnant position, except for the comment Will Kinney makes quoting that actual Bible readers do read the KJV more often.

I’m not sure how one measures that….I know a lot of folks who do open their Bibles of the other versions. Maybe there is a threshold of use somewhere at which the KJV becomes the majority.
I did look that up here….apparently it’s real. Unless these are Fake News!

Anyway the audio below or the text article is revealing…even if it’s not going to convince anyone.
At least you can see the sides of the discussion. I’m not going to tell anyone not to read their modern Bible….but then again I am going to try to be ready to give this side:

(1Pe 3:15)  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Of course then I’m applying that text out of context….since it really applies to the Gospel. But I like what Gill says:
“…but that he should be well acquainted with the ground and foundation of the Christian religion; at least, with the first principles of the oracles of God, and be conversant with the Scriptures, and be able to point out that in them, which is the reason of his holding this and the other truth, though he is not able to give a gainsayer satisfaction, or to stop his mouth: and this is to be done with meekness and fear; with meekness, before men; in an humble modest way; not with an haughty air, and in a morose and surly manner, which serves only to irritate and provoke: and with fear…”

So be it…

Ten Lists - 2nd Day

I'm going to try this posting method for a few days and see how it works. Please remember the real purpose of my blogging on the Bible Chapters I am reading is not to write my own new commentary, you already know my favorites, it's just a opportunity for me to develop my journaling skills.

One obvious need is better proofreading, I hope you tolerate my deficiencies in this area. I have PRDS, Proof Readers Deficiency Syndrome.

Another issue is my English and Grammar/ I like to kid that "I could of went to Harvard", if I only could have passed the English admission.

Anyway for the general audience which you are here is today's list:

The Ten Lists

Today's Reading (day 799)
Lots could be said here, observe from the end of chapter 18 v38 to v22 here, the number of times John mentions Pilate trying not to crucify Jesus. But it could not be avoided, this was part of God's eternal plan. Also note the discussion about him being King of the Jews,as well as the fulfillment of scripture.

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Interesting that Gill points us to a minister's good doctrine as this work.

1 Corinthians 3:14

If any man's work abide,.... That is, if any minister's doctrine will bear the test of daylight, to be looked into, and abide the fire of the word; as gold, silver, and precious stones will, or such doctrines as are comparable to them, which will shine the brighter for being tried by this fire:

which he hath built thereupon; upon the foundation Christ, in entire consistence with, and proportion to it, and highly becoming it:

he shall receive a reward; either from the churches of Christ here, who shall honour and respect him for his faithful labours in the ministry; or from Christ hereafter, who will say, well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.

Paul speaks about rebuking....not everything false is yo be tolerated.

Tit 1:9  Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Tit 1:10  For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

Tit 1:11  Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

Tit 1:12  One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

Tit 1:13  This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

We often limit works to those outright direct acts of service, feeding the poor, etc...all part if the social gospel, and of course to be encouraged, but the brisker picture is often neglected.
Gill writes: v 16
but in works they deny him. The Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions read, "in their own works"; they were not professed, but practical atheists; they owned there was a God, and boasted of their knowledge of him; but their lives and conversations showed that they had no true knowledge of him, and that the fear of him was not before their eyes; these gave the lie to their profession; they practically denied that faith they professed to hold, and the power of godliness, of which they had the form.
Only thing I would mention is consider reading this as a love story between Jesus Christ and his bride the Church.
I made a note here in my Bible that one should read 1 Corinthians 15 to get the full assurance of this verse.

Psa 49:15  But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
Worth taking some time to read and digest, there are more than a few days applications in this text.

Isa 49:22  Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

There came a time that this was fulfilled. Gill....

I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles; beckoning them to come unto him, directing and ordering them what to do; or rather exerting the power of his grace in the conversion of them. The Targum is,

"I will reveal my power among the Gentiles;''

his efficacious grace attending the ministry of the word, whereby it becomes "the power of God unto salvation"; for when that hand is lifted up or exerted, the "word" comes "not in word only", "but in power, and in the Holy Ghost", and is effectual to saving purposes:

We can be glad this chapter is in the Bible. Btw...what was predicted above has occurred.

Act 15:3  And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

Act 15:7  And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

Act 15:8  And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

Act 15:9  And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Act 15:14  Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

Act 15:15  And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

Ten Lists Readings

Over the years I've mentioned often about the 10 Lists Bible Reading Program.

I thought that I might share a couple of the most recent readings and a few insights on what I do.
I'm approaching my 800th day in this program.

And don't forget to get up for the Sunrise.

Sunrise over the Sea of Galilee.

It's designed to have one read 10 separate chapters, one each from each of 10 Books of the Bible each day. When I initially followed the program, I was able to do what the designer Prof. Mike Horner suggested, that is, just read it and don't pause too long to reflect on passages and verses that you don't understand. If one does this it usually takes about 35 minutes a day. Lately if you follow my posts, I am take much more time and spending time looking at wider contexts for the readings, and even checking the Old John Gill or Matthew Henry Commentaries for added insight. And of course it takes a great deal of time to make these individual posts. Often I cover just a few chapters in a day. But I just pickup where I left off and continue reading the next day.

Both approaches are useful.

If you begin this program, I still recommend the faster approach, the first few times through the Bible.
It's useful to get a grasp on the entirety of God's Word....and when you get into a more detail study,  passages will be more familiar in the broader context.

Here is an example from today's reading #791.

Check out the other posts I made here;

If you use the Applet, it tracks your progress over the years.
And it can be linked to BibleGateway,....here's the link, and you can read the chapters all 10 in sequence.

If you want to listen to Max McLean as you read the passage there is a small speaker icon that links to the audio for each chapter. Unfortunately, you cannot link all 10 at once, so you have go back to the text page which is still open in your browser and scroll down to read the next chapter and repeat the audio selection for it....and so forth. I hope that is clear. Here is an example of the first chapter in the reading.

Bible Reading - Concluding 2016 and getting ready for 2017

There are a couple of bloggers who give some useful direction for those wanting to read the Bible more in 2017. I find much of these and other blogger's posts to be insightful, though I can't recommend all that they post. So use your own discernment.

Michelle, even puts in a plug for the Professor Horner 10 Lists program that I switched to a few years ago. You can read more about my experiences in the links below.

Another blogger,  Elizabeth Prata, (why are these women so good at promoting this?) gives this extensive review.

Just to balance it out, Tim Challies, who hooked me into my original 10 Lists reading has this to say for 2017.

I often hear even highly regarded pastors create a straw man argument about people in the church reading too much of the Bible. I really don't find this the case. While it may be true that any number of professors don't obey the Words they find in the Bible, I can rarely if ever find someone who reads it too much. It's much more likely to have the Bible's we have go unread, or only read for those passages that stir up feelings we like. Reading through and believing and obeying the whole Bible just doen't appeal to our culture even in the church today.

10 Lists Reading

Although I've slowed my reading pace thus year, I am still almost up to day 800 of this program. Most of the slowing has been due to my taking the time to post brief comments on many of the passages I am reading.

I encourage those of all ages to pick up a good Bible and begin reading it regularly.
I started with the ESV, and after a couple years made the switch to the KJV.
I use an applet to link to BibleSoft and the Max McLean reading the KJV. My go to iPad and iPhone Bible it e-sword HD, and I use Old John Gill's verse by verse commentary often. There are excellent printed KJV Bible's at the Trinitarian Bible Society site:

And one of my good friends, uses the Matthew Henry Comentary version of the KJV. I bought a couple of those as gifts this year.

Bible Readings

The I'm getting back on track, after an extended 4,400 mile road trip!

I've reengaged in my daily 10 lists....these chapters are full of powerful text.

The session ends with thus one...

Act 26:27  King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.

Act 26:28  Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

Act 26:29  And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

Spend some time with the words and doctrine.....Ephesians 1 has many to reflect upon.

Ask yourself do I believe what I read? Would your faith pass the persecution test? I recently was reading of some of the martyrs: two which standout - Polycarp and Tyndall, in widely different era's.

Here is today's reading.

Bible Reading and Vacation

I must confess, my reading had slowed, but hopefully I am back on track for a while.

I again relate that these posts are more for my own benefit to capture some of the thoughts I have as I read the Bible. There is much more that could be said, the whole Bible could be quoted or memorized, the great commentaries say things much better than I do, and Max McLean reads it better. I do have a healthy record of highlights and underlines in my KJV now that constantly spur my recollection.

Btw this is just day 748 of my reading under this program curiously two of my Old Testament cycles interconnected today, the 187 Books of Moses cycle and the 249 day Historical book cycle.

Both the ending of the Moses cycle and the beginning of the history cycle are in today's reading, putting these in direct order.
If you see any spiritual insight in that coincidence let me know.

Else wise I will just relay...

2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2Ti 3:17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Act 17:10  And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thitherwent into the synagogue of the Jews.

Act 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Act 17:12  Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

Bible reading today....just do it!

My wife and I had a chance to share with a couple in our small Bible Study group ( yes, we still call it that) about reading the Bible, I thought it would be worth posting my thoughts on this.

This is what my Bible reading day is like today.
I am doing day 737 in this never ending never repeating program.

I use 10 bookmarks to keep my place, I could make you a copy.
I also track my progress online which gives me access to all the day's reading and a great audio version.

You can read about my experience with this here...

As you can see I began in 2012.....when I was 62.
I also began with the ESV, which had study notes and is a better translation than the NIV.

I was challenged to try reading the KJV along the way and have never turned back, that is another story.

Here is the program summary.

As you see on average with vacations, missed days, and partial reading days, my average reading is about 5 chapters a day, which on a yearly basis is like reading 1 1/2 times through the Bible a year.

The hard part of this is just doing it....

Mat 5:6  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Luk 11:28  But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Rev 1:3  Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

Rev 22:7  Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

Rev 22:14  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Our task should be to follow this command....

Mat 28:18  And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Mat 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mat 28:20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

2Ti 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2Ti 3:17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

I could say more but this is enough. I would challenge you to read the above verses and grasp that the KJV is in fact understandable. I love how it uses words of meaning like blessed.

Listening and Reading - The Bible with KJV audio

I've been doing this for over 3 years now, KJV for the last 2+ years.

I passed on this exhortation to a couple in our small group this week.

I was very excited by your interest in this last night.
I would encourage you to experiment with this for a month or two.

The idea of reading the Gospel of John (21 chapters) and then the Book of Acts (28 chapters) in the KJV would be more than enough of a test to see where this is useful in your own daily study.

If you have two copies of the KJV or use an online version, you could even read these together, while listening to Max in the audio.

If you miss a day, just pick it up again when you can. You could even listen to 2-3 chapters if you have the time, but a single chapter provides more than enough to think about. If you really want to go off the deep end next time ask me to explain my 10 chapters reading program.

My own reading today included John 15.

It's great in the audio.

There is much I could say about the KJV. Not the least of which is it is a good translation of the authentical Masoretic Hebrew text and the Received Greek text.

I would use the actual KJV not the NKJV.

If you commit to reading the book of John and find you don't clearly understand the text I would be surprised.

There are a handful of strange words used, but only a handful, these words have changed in meaning over the years, an example is "meat", which used to mean food eaten for sustenance , now it means beef or pork, etc. my copy of the KJV has reference notes that make this clear.

There are other words we often don't hear today, but their meaning is very rich and I find that just thinking about them draws my mind deeper into understanding the Bible.

There are many other pluses: many verses have echoes from old hymns and sayings, the KJV uses words like righteousness consistently through out the Bible so the great themes are reconfirmed in countless of passages. It is also metrical and was written to be read aloud. The wording sticks in the mind. I could go on.

Brief note on my 10 Lists Bible reading....600 day milestone.

I passed another milestone today, I finished my 600th day.

There is no way that I will catch up, after a little over 3 years, I should be well over 1,000 days.
I think my blog posting, and travels, and distractions have taken me away for that original objective.

But hopefully some of my reading rubs off into my heart and mind.

I do take heart in my reading at least 5 chapters on average for this period.
It is a joy to have read 6,000 chapters....that's equal to about 5 years of complete Bible chapters, though not all books cycle at the same pace.

One of the great things about the 600 milestone is that I get to turn back to the beginning of Psalms, having completed chapter 150. I now begin my fifth time through the Psalms. A book I neglected for many years.

I still am very much committed to the KJV I will have more on that later.

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

Psa 1:1  Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Psa 1:2  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psa 1:3  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Psa 1:4  The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Psa 1:5  Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

Psa 1:6  For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

As 2014 comes to an end.....

I am reposting this article from a few years ago.

It says much of what I experience.

My own journey down this path began in 2012, that year like Bob Kauflin I read using the ESV.
In 2013 I switched to the KJV, and I still recommend it.

I do admit that my reading has fallen short this year....as I am now only completing Day 570, I am still 150 chapters short of completing even the 2nd year of this intense program.

But the highlights, circles and notes in my KJV are extensive, and I have stopped to post almost 400 times on this blog, just this year, some of the observations I see in the text and the good commentaries of Old John Gill,

Though not a Baptist, I still love his work and find it most useful.

John Gill (23 November 1697 – 14 October 1771) was an English Baptist pastor, biblicalscholar, and theologian who held to a firm Calvinistic soteriology. Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, he attended Kettering Grammar School where he mastered the Latinclassics and learned Greek by age 11. He continued self-study in everything from logic to Hebrew, his love for the latter remaining throughout his life. Wikipedia

Looking forward to more reading in 2015.

Why I’m Reading the Bible in Ten Different Places

Why I’m Reading the Bible in Ten Different Places

img_1499At the end of 2009  I finished reading through the ESV Study Bible and posted a few thoughts on what I learned. During the first half of 2010, I read through it again (just the Scripture, not the notes), but wanted to try something different for the last half of 2010. I had been looking at Prof. Grant Horner’s Bible reading plan and decided to try it. You can read Grant’s  thoughts on it here.

The plan involves reading one chapter from ten different places in the Bible each time you read. Once you reach the end of a section you start over. I was drawn to the plan because I wanted to gain a better perspective on how the Bible comments on itself. And I just want to know God better.

Four of the sections are 150 chapters or more so I’ve been reading two chapters from those sections. That means 14 chapters a day, which sounds ridiculous, preposterous, unattainable, and wildly optimistic. Something that I’d actually need God’s grace to accomplish.

Surprisingly, I completed all my reading in about five and a half months, ending the day before Christmas. Of course, I didn’t really end because whenever I finish a section I just go back to the beginning.

I don’t know how long I’ll be reading Scripture this way, but I know one thing. It’s been really good for my relationship with God. Here’s a few reasons why:

I’m reminded daily how little I know of God’s word.
I’ve been reading the Bible for over 40 years. The more I read the more I feel like I’m just scratching the surface. I don’t want to master the God’s Word. I want God, through his Word, to master me. And I’ve got a long way to go.

I’m understanding better how Jesus is the story line of the bible.
In one sitting I read about the instructions for the tabernacle in Exodus, Job’s cry for a mediator, the failure of the Israelite kings, a psalm extolling the steadfast love of the Lord, the promise of a righteous branch in the prophets, Jesus being rejected by those he came to save, the testimony of Jesus’ death and resurrection in Acts, instructions for godly living in the Epistles, and the consummation of all things in Revelation. I feel like I’m getting a biblical theology lesson every morning.

I’m more convinced of God’s sovereignty over all things.
I still don’t understand how moral responsibility for our choices and God’s sovereignty over our actions work together. Not sure I ever will. But I’m increasingly certain that Scripture contains both, and that this should produce peace and security in my life, not striving and confusion. The God who knows the end from the beginning, who intends evil for good purposes (Gen. 50:19), who directs the paths of arrows (2 Chron. 18:28-33), who ordained the details of Christ’s death and resurrection (Acts 4:27-28), and who has already assured us of his final triumph over death and Satan – this God – can surely handle whatever difficulties and trials I face.

Familiar verses speak to me in unexpected ways.
The other morning I was reading chapters 7&8 from Isaiah. God told Ahaz that He was going to defeat his enemies, and told Ahaz, “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven” (Is. 7:10). But Ahaz played the false humility card and refused. “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test” (Is. 7:12). God said He Himself would provide a sign of his promise. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call him name Immanuel” (Is. 9:14). While those words had an immediate fulfillment, they were finally fulfilled in the birth of Christ. Tears filled my eyes as I realized that Ahaz never dreamed that God would ultimately prove his faithfulness by giving up his own Son as our substitute. God is always better than we expect.

I’m appreciating God’s holiness more than I used to.
God judges sin in the Bible a lot. Of course, there’s a lot of sin in the Bible to judge. Immersing myself in Scripture each day reminds me that God is not who my culture says he is. He’s not apathetic toward sin. He hates it with an unyielding, consuming, terrifying hatred. Which make giving up his Son to endure his wrath in my place all the more amazing.

I’m encountering God in his Word more often.
You might think that reading so much of the Bible at one time doesn’t allow time for reflection and engaging with God. That hasn’t been my experience. It usually takes me between 30-45 minutes to read 14 chapters. I read at a normal pace, but still have time to meditate on, cross-reference, or memorize a passage. And frequently I’m aware of God’s Spirit speaking to me, working on my heart, molding my will to his own.

Obviously, Prof. Horner’s plan isn’t for everyone. Meditating on smaller portions of Scripture has great value as well. But if you’ve been wanting to experience more of God in his Word and to grow in your knowledge of Scripture as a whole, I’d encourage you to try it for a month.

I guarantee you’ll have a hard time stopping. And wouldn’t that be a good thing?

If you’re thinking of reading the Bible through in a year, Crossway has provided a number of other plans at their site. And regardless of what Bible reading plan you use, I’ve found the ESV Study Bible to be an immensely helpful tool.

Update 12.31.10: Justin Taylor has posted an extremely helpful and comprehensive post on various Bible reading plans over at his blog.
