Someone in my Westminster Confession Study Class sent me the links to the discussion which I am reposting below. If you have never heard the issues, perhaps take the time to listen or read the text.
My thinking is we can not persuade anyone…The modern view is
too entrenched in our churches these 50 years….and in the seminaries. From my own perspective…I never picked the KJV up until 2013….a
little over 4 years ago. Would never go back. I had previously switched from RSV to NASB to NIV to ESB
based on the “common” recommendations. I actually started blogging on my Bible reading based on the
ESV back in 2009. My reading took on more earnest in 2012 when I began the 10
Lists Reading Program…..and I now have some 8,000 chapters read under that
plan.
Only the smallest part sticks though.
I can’t say for certain but I think the Holy Spirit has to
change someone to the KJV. Best we can do is a faithful witness, and perhaps having
someone in your group actually reading it helps. Once you begin actually looking at the debates and issues,
it becomes more convincing….but not without the Spirit’s help. Definitely a minority remnant position, except for the
comment Will Kinney makes quoting that actual Bible readers do read the KJV more
often.
I’m not sure how one measures that….I know a lot of folks
who do open their Bibles of the other versions. Maybe there is a threshold of use somewhere at which the KJV
becomes the majority.
I did look that up here….apparently it’s real. Unless these
are Fake News!
Anyway the audio below or the text article is revealing…even
if it’s not going to convince anyone.
At least you can see the sides of the discussion. I’m not going to tell anyone not to read their modern Bible….but
then again I am going to try to be ready to give this side:
(1Pe 3:15) But sanctify the Lord
God in your hearts: and be ready
always to give an answer to every man
that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Of course then I’m applying that text out of
context….since it really applies to the Gospel. But I like what Gill says:“…but that he should be well acquainted with the ground and foundation of the Christian religion; at least, with the first principles of the oracles of God, and be conversant with the Scriptures, and be able to point out that in them, which is the reason of his holding this and the other truth, though he is not able to give a gainsayer satisfaction, or to stop his mouth: and this is to be done with meekness and fear; with meekness, before men; in an humble modest way; not with an haughty air, and in a morose and surly manner, which serves only to irritate and provoke: and with fear…”
So be it…
