Ten Lists - 2nd Day

I'm going to try this posting method for a few days and see how it works. Please remember the real purpose of my blogging on the Bible Chapters I am reading is not to write my own new commentary, you already know my favorites, it's just a opportunity for me to develop my journaling skills.

One obvious need is better proofreading, I hope you tolerate my deficiencies in this area. I have PRDS, Proof Readers Deficiency Syndrome.

Another issue is my English and Grammar/ I like to kid that "I could of went to Harvard", if I only could have passed the English admission.

Anyway for the general audience which you are here is today's list:

• John 19

Lots could be said here, observe from the end of chapter 18 v38 to v22 here, the number of times John mentions Pilate trying not to crucify Jesus. But it could not be avoided, this was part of God's eternal plan. Also note the discussion about him being King of the Jews,as well as the fulfillment of scripture.

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Interesting that Gill points us to a minister's good doctrine as this work.

1 Corinthians 3:14

If any man's work abide,.... That is, if any minister's doctrine will bear the test of daylight, to be looked into, and abide the fire of the word; as gold, silver, and precious stones will, or such doctrines as are comparable to them, which will shine the brighter for being tried by this fire:

which he hath built thereupon; upon the foundation Christ, in entire consistence with, and proportion to it, and highly becoming it:

he shall receive a reward; either from the churches of Christ here, who shall honour and respect him for his faithful labours in the ministry; or from Christ hereafter, who will say, well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.

Paul speaks about rebuking....not everything false is yo be tolerated.

Tit 1:9  Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Tit 1:10  For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

Tit 1:11  Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

Tit 1:12  One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

Tit 1:13  This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

We often limit works to those outright direct acts of service, feeding the poor, etc...all part if the social gospel, and of course to be encouraged, but the brisker picture is often neglected.

Gill writes: v 16

but in works they deny him. The Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions read, "in their own works"; they were not professed, but practical atheists; they owned there was a God, and boasted of their knowledge of him; but their lives and conversations showed that they had no true knowledge of him, and that the fear of him was not before their eyes; these gave the lie to their profession; they practically denied that faith they professed to hold, and the power of godliness, of which they had the form.

Only thing I would mention is consider reading this as a love story between Jesus Christ and his bride the Church.

• Psalms 49

I made a note here in my Bible that one should read 1 Corinthians 15 to get the full assurance of this verse.

Psa 49:15  But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

• Proverbs 24

Worth taking some time to read and digest, there are more than a few days applications in this text.

• 1 Samuel 3

• Isaiah 49

Isa 49:22  Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

There came a time that this was fulfilled. Gill....

I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles; beckoning them to come unto him, directing and ordering them what to do; or rather exerting the power of his grace in the conversion of them. The Targum is,

"I will reveal my power among the Gentiles;''

his efficacious grace attending the ministry of the word, whereby it becomes "the power of God unto salvation"; for when that hand is lifted up or exerted, the "word" comes "not in word only", "but in power, and in the Holy Ghost", and is effectual to saving purposes:

• Acts 15

We can be glad this chapter is in the Bible. Btw...what was predicted above has occurred.

Act 15:3  And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

Act 15:7  And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

Act 15:8  And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

Act 15:9  And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Act 15:14  Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
