These play on two themes I’ve discussed before:
1) The necessity of balance, the both/and concept. Also note the emphasis on widows and orphans…in our society we tend to also want to support on the left side all numbers of other people who really should not be counted in these categories. Even more so we promote policies and morals that actually increase the number of widows and orphans. in society today. Read the previous post today for some insight as to how this plays out. In fact we are also guilty of training people up to by lazy….just think TV.
2) Preaching is a priority. Particularly preaching the Gospel. I’ve been struck lately at how central making the case for the Good News is. Proving from the Bible the truth of what we proclaim is everywhere in the early Church. One interesting though most of the forums for preaching were public places in the town centers, meeting places and mostly synagogues. This is where the case for Christ was proclaimed with sound reasoning. And people listened, heard, believed but also throw stones and hauled the apostles and disciples off to court or prison. There was a sharp edge to their preaching, it did ruffle feathers.
In the Church itself….believer met together to pray and learn from the teaching of the apostles how to know God better, how to love him and love others and how to live out a Biblically based life.
Note the Gospel not only is a message to bring unsaved to Christ, but also a message to the saved sinners who are the Church on how to live out our faith.
