The truth about dust and clay.....Job 33:6

Gen 2:7    then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

On Sunday morning we continue to study the opening chapters of Genesis.

This came up again in my reading in Job

As you recall Elihu begins to speak.

Job 32:6    And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion.

He offers...

Job 33:1    Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

Job 33:2    Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

Job 33:3    My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

Job 33:4    The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

Perhaps this is wise...perhaps not...

Pro 17:27    He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

Pro 17:28    Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

Be it whatever he does begin his speech well, on the foundation of our creation and God's sovereignty.

Job 33:6  Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was pinched off from a piece of clay. ESV

Clay is not looked upon too highly in the Bible. Other references in Job are:

Job 4:19  How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?

Job 10:9  Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

Job 13:12  Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

Job 27:16  Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;

Job 33:6  Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay.

Job 38:14  It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

In the NT.... In the KJV the word is mostly used in the medical sense.

Joh 9:6  When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

Joh 9:11  He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

Joh 9:14  And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

Joh 9:15  Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

But it's  original meaning is also reinforced.

Rom 9:21  Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

earth, 1

2Ti 2:20

earthen, 1

2Co 4:7

Which in the ESV is rendered clay. In this case I like the ESV better!

Rom 9:21  Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?

2Co 4:7  But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

2Ti 2:20  Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable.
