The Horse and the Mule

These animals are mentioned twice today...

Psa 32:7    Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

Psa 32:8    I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

Psa 32:9    Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

I see no connection to the registry listing in Nehemiah.

I am curious though if and of those listed in the chapter are found in Jesus' genealogy? See note below.

Neh 7:68    Their horses, seven hundred thirty and six: their mules, two hundred forty and five:

Zerubbabel

Zerub'babel. (born at Babel, that is, Babylon). The head of the tribe of Judah, at the time of the return from the Babylonish captivity, in the first year of Cyrus. The history of Zerabbabel in the Scriptures is as follows: In the first year of Cyrus, he was living at Babylon, and was the recognized prince of Judah in the captivity, — what, in later times, was called "the prince of the captivity," or "the prince."

On the issuing of Cyrus' decree, he immediately availed himself of it, and placed himself at the head of those of his countrymen "whose spirit God had raised to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem." It is probable that he was in the king of Babylon's service, both from his having, like Daniel and the three children, received a Chaldee name, Sheshbazzar, and from the fact that he was appointed by the Persian king to the office of governor of Judea.

On arriving at Jerusalem, Zerubbabel's great work, which he set about immediately, was the rebuilding of the Temple. In the second month of the second year of the return, the foundation was laid with all the pomp which could be commanded. The efforts of the Samaritans were successful in putting a stop to the work during the seven remaining years of the reign of Cyrus and through the eight years of Cambyses and Smerdis. Nor does Zerubbabel appear quite blameless for this long delay. The difficulties in the way of building the Temple were not such as needing have stopped the work and, during this long suspension of sixteen years, Zerubbabel and the rest of the people had been busy in building costly houses for themselves.

But in the second year of Darius, light dawned upon the darkness of the colony from Babylon. In that year — it was the most memorable event in Zerabbabel's life — the spirit of prophecy suddenly blazed up with a most brilliant light among the returned captives. Their words fell like sparks upon tinder. In a moment, Zerubbabel roused from his apathy, threw his whole strength into the work.

After much opposition, see Nehemiah, The Book of, and many hindrances find delays, the Temple was at length finished, in the sixth pear of Darius, and was dedicated with much pomp and rejoicing. See Temple. The only other works of Zerubbabel of which we learn from Scripture are the restoration of the courses of priests and Levites and of the provision for their maintenance, according to the institution of David, Ezr 6:18; Neh 12:47, the registering the returned captives according to their genealogies, Neh 7:5, and the keeping of a Passover in the seventh year of Darius, with which last event ends all that we know of the life of Zerubbabel. His apocryphal history is told in 1 Esdras 3-7.

The exact parentage of Zerubbabel is a little obscure, from his being always called the son of Shealtiel, Ezr 3:2; Ezr 3:8; Ezr 5:2 etc.; Hag 1:1; Hag 1:12; Hag 1:14 etc., and appearing as such in the genealogies of Christ, Mat 1:12; Luk 3:27, whereas, in 1Ch 3:19, he is represented as the son of Pedaiah, Shealtiel or Salathiel's brother, and consequently as Salathiel's nephew. Zerubbabel was the legal successor and heir of Jeconiah's royal estate, the grandson of Neri and the lineal descendant of Nathan, the son of David. In the New Testament, the name appears in the Greek form of Zorobabel.

It's interesting that Haggai speaks directly about Zerubbabel....who is notes as right in the center of genealogies of Jesus.

Hag 2:23    In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.

Hag 2:1    In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying,

Hag 2:2    Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,

Hag 2:3    Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

Hag 2:4    Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:

Hag 2:5    According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.

Hag 2:6    For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

Hag 2:7    And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

Hag 2:8    The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

Hag 2:9    The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

Hag 2:10    In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

Hag 2:11    Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

Hag 2:12    If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

Hag 2:13    Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.

Hag 2:14    Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

Hag 2:15    And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

Hag 2:16    Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.

Hag 2:17    I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.

Hag 2:18    Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider it.

Hag 2:19    Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

Hag 2:20    And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,

Hag 2:21    Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

Hag 2:22    And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

Hag 2:23    In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.
