Singing in the Rain. ( I mean in the Church)

I've wondered often about various forms of singing in church.

This ranges from today's loud rock band of worse concert like music, to repetitive word or phrase singing, to modern hymns and praise dongs all the way back to the old hymn sings.

The common theme in all of these is we sing what we like, what makes us feel good of happy, gives us pleasure in raising our voice supposedly to God.

Often we are so passionate about our way that we complain or argue about this aspect of church. Even to the extent of dividing the church body over the issue.

What is missing...What God desires!

Yes we often quote a bible phrase.

Psa 66:1  To the chief Musician, A Song or Psalm. Make ajoyful noise unto God, all ye lands:

Psa 81:1  To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of Asaph. Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyfulnoise unto the God of Jacob.

Psa 95:1  O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make ajoyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Psa 95:2  Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

Psa 98:4  Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

Psa 98:6  With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyfulnoise before the LORD, the King.

Psa 100:1  A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

Or

Psa 33:3  Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

Psa 40:3  And he hath put a new song in my mouth, evenpraise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

Psa 96:1  O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.

Psa 98:1  A Psalm. O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

Psa 144:9  I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.

Psa 149:1  Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a newsongand his praise in the congregation of saints.

Notice though all these are in the context of singing the Psalms, or praying the Psalms.

There is a new song but this refers to Christ's coming both first and second.

Isa 42:10  Sing unto the LORD a new songand his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

Rev 5:9  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

Rev 14:3  And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty andfour thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

But what is missing....context.

Just as an example read Isaiah 42 fully.

Isa 42:1    Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Isa 42:2    He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

Isa 42:3    A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

Isa 42:4    He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

Isa 42:5    Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

Isa 42:6    I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

Isa 42:7    To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Isa 42:8    am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Isa 42:9    Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

Isa 42:10    Sing unto the LORD a new songand his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

Isa 42:11    Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.

Isa 42:12    Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands.

Isa 42:13    The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.

Isa 42:14    I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.

Isa 42:15    I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.

Isa 42:16    And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

Isa 42:17    They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

Isa 42:18    Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.

Isa 42:19    Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD'S servant?

Isa 42:20    Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.

Isa 42:21    The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and makeit honourable.

Isa 42:22    But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.

Isa 42:23    Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?

Isa 42:24    Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.

Isa 42:25    Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

As a practical application I saw this today in Psalm 72.

How often do we sing but just a thought from this Psalm, but ignore the whole message.

And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory

Anyway, something to think about radical Psalm singing of the whole psaltery! Not done much today.

Psalm 72

King James Version (KJV)

72:1 Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son.

He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.

The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.

He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.

He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.

In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

11 Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.

12 For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.

13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.

14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.

16 There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.

18 Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.

19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.

20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.
