Mátthew 10

Quickly, there is lots in this passage.

Note first the Bible says the twelve Apostles were given specific powers....

Mat 10:1    And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Mat 10:2    Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

Mat 10:3    Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

Mat 10:4    Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Their ministry was focused on Israel......

Mat 10:5    These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:

Mat 10:6    But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

They were to preach and heal using these specific powers....btw this was before the coming of the Holy Spirit......

Mat 10:7    And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Mat 10:8    Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Mat 10:9    Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,

Mat 10:10    Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

Mat 10:11    And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

Mat 10:12    And when ye come into an house, salute it.

Mat 10:13    And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

I've heard the Person of Peace, POP being used in modern discipleship groups, I'm not sure it can be lifted out of context and used today to create division? There maybe a righteous and holy separation based on truth, doctrine and the words of the Apostles and Prophets which is the whole Bible. But this shouldn't be handles lightly.

Mat 10:14    And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

Mat 10:15    Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Yes the Bible does speak of wolves. And most negatively....

Jer 5:6  Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, andwolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, andtheir backslidings are increased.

Eze 22:27  Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.

Hab 1:8  Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat.

Zep 3:3  Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

Mat 7:15  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Mat 10:16  Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Luk 10:3  Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

Joh 10:12  But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

Act 20:29  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

Mat 10:16    Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Again this message is mentioned many times in the Bible....two examples.

Mat 5:10    Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 5:11    Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Mat 5:12    Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

And

1Pe 4:12    Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

1Pe 4:13    But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

1Pe 4:14    If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

Mat 10:17    But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

Mat 10:18    And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

We discussed this briefly in our small group....it doesn't seem mean give up knowledge and study of the word of God the Scriptures....for these Apostles both knew the scriptures and wrote about them and used them in their preaching and letters.

Mat 10:19    But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

Mat 10:20    For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

There will be division....

Mat 10:21    And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

Mat 10:22    And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Mat 10:23    But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

Mat 10:24    The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

Mat 10:25    It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

Mat 10:26    Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

Mat 10:27    What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, thatpreach ye upon the housetops.

This is a very critical passage of doctrine.

Mat 10:28    And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

And a reassurance. This seems related to the persecution referred to earlier.

Mat 10:29    Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

Mat 10:30    But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

Mat 10:31    Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Mat 10:32    Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

Mat 10:33    But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Note that there is much danger if one of the wolves or a cult like leader takes this high ground and uses the Bible to justify their position and actions.

Mat 10:34    Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Mat 10:35    For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Mat 10:36    And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Mat 10:37    He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Mat 10:38    And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

Mat 10:39    He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Mat 10:40    He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Mat 10:41    He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.

Mat 10:42    And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

John Gill writes well on this point.

Matthew 10:42

And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones,.... Our Lord gradually descends from prophets to righteous men, and from righteous men, to those of the lowest form and class among them; who have the least measure of grace, and share of spiritual light, and knowledge; who are outwardly the poorest, meanest, and most contemptible in the eyes of the world; and are little, even the least of saints, in their own esteem and account: whosoever takes notice but of "one" of these, receives him into his house, and gives him

a cup of cold water only, is regarded, a phrase used to express the least favour, or benefit whatever.

"So says (t) Maimonides, one that calls to his friend to dine with him, and he refuses, and swears, or vows, that he shall not enter into his house, nor will he give him to drink, טפת צונן "a drop of cold water", &c.''

Moreover, this is said to prevent any objection, on account of the mean and low condition persons may be in, to their relieving necessitous objects; for everyone is capable of doing this, and if they can do no more, it is accepted. Now whosoever takes notice of, and shows favour to the meanest of Christ's people, though it be but bestowing so small a benefit as a cup of cold water; yet, if it is done

in the name of a disciple, or because that poor person is a disciple of Christ,

verily, says Christ,

I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward: it will be observed another day by Christ, who takes what is done to the least of his brethren, as done to himself. The Jews say many things in praise of hospitality, to תלמיד חכם, "a disciple of a wise man"; and observe (u), that he that hospitably entertains such an one in his house, and causes him to eat and drink, and partake of the goods of his house, there is reason to believe, he shall be much more blessed than the house of Obed Edom was for the ark's sake, which neither ate nor drank with him; and which may be compared with this passage.

(t) Hilchot Nedarim, c. 8. sect. 10. (u) T. Bab, Beracot, fol. 63. 2. & 64. 1.

Paul speaks of this in another way...

1Pe 4:7    But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

1Pe 4:8    And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

1Pe 4:9    Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

1Pe 4:10 📝 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

1Pe 4:11    If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do itas of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
