Called to be an apostle

Recently some discussion in our church has begun to focus on being an apostle.
Some in today's visible church expound reopening the office of Apostle.

Even defining strange new terms for it..

SENIOR GUARDIAN from the Order of Mission web site.

We recognise that apostolic leadership is necessary to continue the forward movement of the Order. The Senior Guardian is the apostolic leader, carrying, guarding and developing the spiritual vision of the Order.  Elected by the ‘Chapter’ of the Order (the gathering of permanent members), the Senior Guardian serves for a period of six years and is accountable to the Visitors of the Order, the Council (the Guardians of the Order) and the Chapter itself.

Currently the Senior Guardian is Mike Breen, who lives in Pawleys Island, SC.

Others such as the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), teach the office and much more.

There are even online tests you can take to determine your apostle, prophet aptitude!
Much of this is driven by the new emergent, missional vision casting of the new church, the new reformation and the leadership, coaching, direction being cast around.

All perhaps in the good intention of "doing good"....and establishing the Kingdom on earth.

Today's reading in Romans 1. Addresses the role of apostle.  Perhaps it is helpful.

But first.

These passages articulate who were the apostles...there were 12, each picked by Jesus,

Joh 6:65    And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

Joh 6:65    And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

Joh 6:66    From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Joh 6:67    Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Joh 6:68    Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Joh 6:69    And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

Joh 6:70    Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

He was replaced in this process..

Act 1:20    For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

Act 1:21    Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

Act 1:22    Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

Act 1:23    And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

Act 1:24    And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

Act 1:25    That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

Act 1:26    And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Pro 16:33    The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

And finally Paul is chosen....

Act 9:1    And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

Act 9:2    And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

Act 9:3    And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

Act 9:4    And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Act 9:5    And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Act 9:6    And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Act 9:15    But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

Act 9:16    For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.

Btw Ananias was a messenger of the word of the Lord...in a sense an example of a prophet.

Act 9:17    And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Paul's response..

Act 9:20    And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

Of which Roman's is one of the best examples.

Romans 1 King James Version (KJV)

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

Yes we are also called for obedience to the faith.

Mat 28:18    And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Mat 28:19    Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mat 28:20    Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The called are those the apostles taught...by direct word, preaching, and by signs and miracles, and today by their preserved word in the Bible.

Not all are apostles....only these select ones.

1Co 12:28    And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

1Co 12:29    Are all apostlesare all prophetsare all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

1Co 12:30    Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

1Co 12:31    But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

The next chapter refocuses the church on Faith, Hope and Love.

1Co 13:1    Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

1Co 13:2    And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

1Co 13:3    And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Paul never mentions being an apostle in this list.

He concludes.

1Co 13:13    And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Then he goes on..

1Co 14:1    Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

Finally just to wrap this up...to this church that was do wrapped up in the "gifts".

1Co 14:22    Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

1Co 14:23    If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

1Co 14:24    But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

1Co 14:25    And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

1Co 14:26    How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

1Co 14:27    If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

1Co 14:28    But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

1Co 14:29    Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

1Co 14:30    If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

1Co 14:31    For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

1Co 14:32    And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

1Co 14:33    For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Btw...Those today that take Paul's ordering of APEST, rarely will acknowledge his authority in the next verse....

1Co 14:34    Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

1Co 14:35    And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

1Co 14:36    What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

1Co 14:37    If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

1Co 14:38    But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

1Co 14:39    Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

1Co 14:40    Let all things be done decently and in order.

Proper offices in the church are defined also in..

A prime characteristic of a bishop, overseer or elder is:

Tit 1:9    Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Or from 1Ti 3 ...apt to teach

Paul also exhorts being called to preach, and being called to be one of the senders also.

Rom 10:11    For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Rom 10:12    For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

Rom 10:13    For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Rom 10:14    How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Rom 10:15    And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Rom 10:16    But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

Rom 10:17    So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Again to get an indication of what one of these apostles does.....read.

Now back to Romans 1......

To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

Old John Gill writes...

that I may impart some spiritual gift: not any extraordinary gift of the Spirit; but spiritual light, knowledge, peace, and comfort, through the exercise of his ministerial gift: whence it may be observed, that that which qualities men for the preaching of the word to the profit of others, is a gift, a gift by grace; a spiritual one, which comes from the Spirit of God, and may be, and is to be imparted to others in the free use and exercise of it; and that,

to the end that saints may be established; for such who are called by grace, need establishing. They are indeed in a safe state and condition; they are encircled in the arms of everlasting love, they are fixed in the hands of Christ, secured in an everlasting covenant, established on the rock of ages, and settled in a state from whence they can never fall: yet, notwithstanding this, they are sometimes very unstable in their hearts, in their frames, in the exercise of grace, and the discharge of duty, and in professing and adhering to the doctrines of the Gospel; wherefore they need establishing, as to a more firm persuasion of interest in the love of God, and in the covenant of grace, as to a more stable exercise of grace in Christ, and as to a more constant discharge of duty, and steady profession of adherence to the truths of the Gospel; to all which the ministration of the word has a tendency, with a divine blessing.

12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
