Jesus' Great Commission

Word search study: Jesus' great commission(commandment) to the Apostles and disciples ....even unto the end of the world.

Carrying on the model of Jesus' teaching.

Mat 11:1    And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

Mat 28:18    And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Mat 28:19    Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mat 28:20    Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

God's very first command to men, note he had already given commands to the whole heaven and earth.

Gen 1:1    In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Man's charge before the first commandment

Gen 1:28    And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Gen 1:29    And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Gen 2:16    And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

Gen 2:17    But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

God designed marriage was the second commandment expressed as a conclusion.

Gen 2:24    Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Jesus also reaffirmed the heart of the Old Testament commandments.

Mat 22:34    But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

Mat 22:35    Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

Mat 22:36    Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Mat 22:37    Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38    This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39    And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 22:40    On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Mar 12:29  And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

Mar 12:30  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mar 12:31  And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Mat 5:17    Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Mat 5:18    For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Mat 5:19    Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them,the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 5:20    For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

One can read in Matthew 5-7 how Jesus clarifies the law of the heart.

Also note....

Mat 7:12    Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Mat 7:13    Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Mat 7:14    Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Mat 7:15    Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Mat 7:16    Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

Mat 7:17    Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

Mat 7:18    A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Mat 7:19    Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Mat 7:20    Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Mat 7:21    Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Mat 7:22    Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

1Co 13:1    Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

1Co 13:2    And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

1Co 13:3    And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Mat 7:23    And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Mat 7:24    Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

Mat 7:25    And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

Mat 7:26    And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

Mat 7:27    And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Mat 7:28    And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

Mat 7:29    For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

So how should we react to this? Can we by our works be perfect.

Mat 5:48  Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

1Pe 5:10  But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

1Jn 2:5  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

1Jn 4:12  No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

1Jn 4:17  Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

1Jn 4:18  There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Rev 3:2  Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfectbefore God.

Heb 7:19  For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

Jas 1:25  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Jas 2:22  Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

Jas 2:23    And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Is James saying we must?

I don't think so. I think he is just illustrating how true faith works...it does produce fruit. Fruit of obedience to God's commands, obedience that comes from the heart not the letter of the law, but is driven by the spirit to obedience, which is what Jesus command that we teach...

Mat 28:20    Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you

Some of this will involve, believing God's word in the Bible, some understanding wisdom and doctrine, some in service the body of Christ and our neighbors. These are all good works. All fruits of our faith.

But we don't earn our salvation, nor do we earn our continuation in the faith, both of these are gifts of God's grace and mercy. We only exhibit the belief and obedience that God has commanded us to do, and this not of our own working, but just our duty of love that we are empowered to do by the faith given us. But we must not neglect it so great a salvation.

Heb 2:1    Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Heb 2:2    For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

Heb 2:3    How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Heb 2:4    God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

One should take the time to study the sixteenth chapter of the Westminster Confession which has clear teaching on this.

CHAPTER XVI.

Of Good Works.

I. Good works are only such as God has commanded in His holy Word, and not such as, without the warrant thereof, are devised by men, out of blind zeal, or upon any pretence of good intention.

II. These good works, done in obedience to God's commandments, are the fruits and evidences of a true and lively faith: and by them believers manifest their thankfulness, strengthen their assurance, edify their brethren, adorn the profession of the Gospel, stop the mouths of the adversaries, and glorify God, whose workmanship they are, created in Christ Jesus thereunto, that, having their fruit unto holiness, they may have the end, eternal life.

III. Their ability to do good works is not at all of themselves, but wholly from the Spirit of Christ. And that they may be enabled thereunto, beside the graces they have already received, there is required an actual influence of the same Holy Spirit, to work in them to will, and to do, of His good pleasure: yet are they not hereupon to grow negligent, as if they were not bound to perform any duty unless upon a special motion of the Spirit; but they ought to be diligent in stirring up the grace of God that is in them.

IV. They who, in their obedience, attain to the greatest height which is possibly in this life, are so far from being able to supererogate, and to do more than God requires, as that they fall short of much which in duty they are bound to do.

V. We cannot by our best works merit pardon of sin, or eternal life at the hand of God, by reason of the great disproportion that is between them and the glory to come; and the infinite distance that is between us and God, whom, by them, we can neither profit, nor satisfy for the debt of our former sins, but when we have done all we can, we have done but our duty, and are unprofitable servants: and because, as they are good, they proceed from His Spirit, and as they are wrought by us, they are defiled, and mixed with so much weakness and imperfection, that they cannot endure the severity of God's judgment.

VI. Notwithstanding, the persons of believers being accepted through Christ, their good works also are accepted in Him; not as though they were in this life wholly unblamable and unreproveable in God's sight; but that He, looking upon them in His Son, is pleased to accept and reward that which is sincere, although accompanied with many weaknesses and imperfections.

VII. Works done by unregenerate men, although for the matter of them they may be things which God commands; and of good use both to themselves and others: yet, because they proceed not from an heart purified by faith; nor are done in a right manner, according to the Word; nor to a right end, the glory of God, they are therefore sinful and cannot please God, or make a man meet to receive grace from God: and yet, their neglect of them is more sinful and displeasing unto God.

Pastor Steven Dilday | WCF 16: Of Good Works

So can we really do this? Can we make ourselves righteous?

Jesus seems to infer that it is impossible, our will will prevent us we can't be either self-righteous, work out our own perfection, commit to the "all" of even the first commandment.

Mat 22:37    Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38    This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 19:16    And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

Mat 19:17    And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is,God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Mat 19:18    He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Mat 19:19    Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 19:20    The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Mat 19:21    Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Mat 19:22    But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Mat 19:23    Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 19:24    And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Mat 19:25    When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

Mat 19:26    But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

He couldn't do it, neither than can we.

Rom 3:9    What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

Rom 3:10    As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Rom 3:11    There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

Rom 3:12    They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Rom 3:21    But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

Rom 3:22    Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Rom 3:23    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Rom 4:22    And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Rom 4:23    Now it was not written

Rom 4:22    And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Rom 4:23    Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

Rom 4:24    But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

Rom 4:25    Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Rom 1:15    So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

Rom 1:16    For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Rom 1:17    For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Is there a new commandment or an old one?

Lev 19:18  Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbouras thyself: I am the LORD.

Zec 8:17  And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

Deu 6:1    Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

Deu 6:2    That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Deu 6:3    Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

Deu 6:4    Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Deu 6:5    And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Deu 6:6    And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

Deu 6:7    And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Deu 6:8    And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Deu 6:9    And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Deu 6:10    And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

Deu 6:11    And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

Deu 6:12    Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Deu 6:13    Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Deu 6:14    Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

Deu 6:15    (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

Deu 6:16    Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

Deu 6:17    Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.

The Apostle John reconfirmed this at the end of the Apostolic age.

Joh 13:34  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

1Jn 2:7  Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

1Jn 2:8  Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

2Jn 1:5  And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

Mat 28:20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
