John 17 - Words matter!

Reading John in the KJV is so wonderful, words of significance just jump off the page.

I will let you delight in the reading of the whole chapter below. This is Jesus' actual prayer for his disciples and us. We should take note.

Joh 17:20  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Note even the use of the word, "word" in v.20 and here....

Joh 17:1  These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

Joh 17:6  I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Joh 17:8  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Joh 17:14  I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Joh 17:17  Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Joh 17:20  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

In our Sunday study of the WCF we are reading in Chapter 1 about the Word of God, preserved and sufficient for us in 66 books of the Bible, the Word of God. Get a copy and read it in the original confession version.

Btw, remember John opens his book with.
Joh 1:1  📝  ♥️  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Here are a few other key words.

World
The book is full of this word.
Most famous of course is...

Joh 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

But we are called to understand what the world means and what the Bible actually says about people believing. We begin to get this story filled in with the immediate next verses.

Joh 3:17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Joh 3:18  ♥️  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Joh 3:19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

And our previous chapter 16 adds much clarity, with verse like.

Joh 16:8  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Joh 16:11  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Joh 16:20  Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

Joh 16:33  These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

So now we find Jesus referring to the world and it's condition in chapter 17.

Joh 17:5  And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Joh 17:6  I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Strangely, contradicting the often misuse of John 3:16, implying universal love, Jesus doesn't pray for the "whole world".

Joh 17:9  I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

Joh 17:11  And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

Joh 17:12  While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Joh 17:13  And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

Joh 17:14  I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Joh 17:15  I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

Joh 17:16  They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Joh 17:18  As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

Joh 17:21  That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Joh 17:23  I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Joh 17:24  Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

Joh 17:25  O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

Given

Go back and read John 6, which I have written on before. Just a sample.

Joh 6:37   ♥️  All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Joh 6:44   ♥️  No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

But here in chapter 17, we see Jesus repeatedly using this word to clarify just who the disciples were....not just any men. But....

Joh 17:2  As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

Joh 17:4  I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

Joh 17:6  I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Joh 17:7  Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

Joh 17:8  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Joh 17:14  I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Joh 17:22  And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Joh 17:24  Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

Note how verse 12 repeats John 6:37. And all these refer to God the Fathers role in what we call election.

Study also the verses referring to glory, the foundation of the world and any other doctrines you see in the text.
