2 Timothy 3 - Wow!

I was reading this today in my normal 10 Lists readings. It struck me, just how direct Paul was in the first 14 verses. As you know verses 16-17 are long time favorites.

Today's reading in 2 Timothy 3, tied nicely to our couple's Bible Study last night.

Hopefully we all found something meaningful in Luke 17.

I probability spoke too much, but at least my wife brought us back to the basics of applications.

I did mention about my putting scripture out in my blog on a regular basis now. This is a way I am trying to share the gospel, even if no one reads it.

Today's reading actually ties nicely into the context we discussed in the Bible study.

Luke's verses on the Kingdom of God and the days of the Son of man sparked hopefully a useful discussion.

Luk 17:20  And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

Luk 17:22  And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
Luk 17:23  And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.

Luk 17:24  For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

Luk 17:30  Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

But when I opened 2 Timothy 3 this morning the message was even more profound.
I suggest you read it in the KJV. And listen here to Max while you follow along.

BTW before we get into the text, this chapters has one of my goto passages, and confirms how we must be rooted in the Scriptures. I think Patti convinced me to memorize these while we were on a backpack trip years ago....well v16-17 that is.

2Ti 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

BTW as much as I agree that we must be doer's of the word not hearer's only, I think that this is often used as a logical fallacy error, perhaps a strawman argument. Some one described as:

"Where you misrepresented someone's argument to make it easier to attack.

By exaggerating, misrepresenting, or just completely fabricating someone's argument, it's much easier to present your own position as being reasonable, but this kind of dishonesty serves to undermine honest rational debate."

We just have to be careful here....in today's culture...I really don't see that we put too much time if any time into reading and understanding what the Bible is actually saying. Anyway the way I would say it is if we are really reading it, the Holy Spirit will be applying it, and drawing us even deeper as well as helping us in our doing duty.

Well after all that, here is the Chapter.....and I'm not sure our times are any worse than Paul's and Timothy's era, which was almost 2,000 years ago. though this sure seems to describe our world today...and fits nicely with the Luke 17 text also. Hey, Paul even names names...so he is not afraid or ashamed of this gospel...

Rom 1:15  So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

Rom 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Rom 1:17  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

I will leave this to you to apply......

Godlessness in the Last Days

2Ti 3:1  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2Ti 3:2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2Ti 3:3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
2Ti 3:4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2Ti 3:6  For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2Ti 3:7  Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
2Ti 3:8  Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
2Ti 3:9  But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

2Ti 3:10  But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
2Ti 3:11  Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
2Ti 3:12  Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
2Ti 3:13  But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
2Ti 3:14  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
2Ti 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

So the bottom line is...

2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
